All about me
My name is Rose - christened Margaret (after my paternal grandmother). I was baptized in the Rosary Church of Midleton. Co Cork. They said I was born as the people were returning from Mass on 13th October 1912 in Ballinacurra. My father fell madly in love with Frances Kennedy of Rathgopog in the parish of Cloyne. He was about fifty and she was eighteen. While she was a clever woman and good looking she was also mentally unstable and left us when the third of her four daughters was born. My father took us to his sister, my aunt Kate. Here we were looked after but four years later my mother came back and we were very unhappy from then on. I left Ireland in 1930 aged 18. I trained to be a nurse at the Royal United Hospital, Bath. After eight months I was told to leave - I was not thought clever enough to be a nurse. I was 19 and alone. I worked as a housemaid in Somerset for about a year. I then applied to train as a nurse in Portsmouth. They would not accept me at first but I was allowed to work as an 'assistant' at the Infectious Diseases' Hospital (now closed). One day I decided to apply for SRN training and went to St Mary's. I was never a popular person but I loved my patients and they loved me. While I was there I met my husband Joe at a St Patrick's Day dance. We went out together for about six years. We had very little money but Joe saved up enough to put down a deposit for a house. We had four children, three boys and a girl (she was born when I was 43 and Joe was 53). I had a very happy married life. Joe was great. I didn't go to work but I devoted my life to my children and husband. I now live in Poole in Dorset with my daughter Anne and her family.
